Charlee Horse Program

Where Horsepower Meets Healing

At TLC Therapeutic Riding Center, lessons are more than time spent on horseback. They are carefully designed, goal-driven experiences that combine horsemanship, therapeutic techniques, and the power of human–horse connection. Our certified instructors work closely with each rider, creating an individualized plan that supports their physical, cognitive, and emotional growth.

Whether a participant is working on balance, coordination, communication, emotional regulation, or simply gaining confidence, every lesson is tailored to meet them where they are. We believe in celebrating progress at every step — from mastering a new riding skill to discovering the joy of connection with a horse.

Why It Works

Horses move in ways similar to the human walk, which can help improve core strength, posture, and coordination. They also provide immediate, honest feedback — reacting to a rider’s cues and body language — which builds self-awareness, confidence, and emotional connection. For many of our participants, the barn becomes a place of joy, empowerment, and belonging.

The Charlee Horse Program was created in honor of two special souls who touched our hearts — a young girl named Charlee, and a gentle therapy horse named Buddy.

Instead of asking for birthday presents, Charlee chose to have friends and family donate to TLC. Her kindness sparked an idea: what if we could create a program that shared her love of horses with others?

The “Horse” in the name honors Buddy, one of our treasured therapeutic riding horses. His gentle nature, contagious love for people, and patient spirit showed us the true meaning of trust, friendship, and acceptance. When Buddy passed in 2022, he left behind a legacy of compassion, connection, and joy — values we continue to pass on through this program.

The Charlee Horse Program is a four-week experience focused on building:

  • Character – Developing integrity, responsibility, and empathy.

  • Confidence – Encouraging self-belief and a willingness to try new things.

  • Communication – Learning to express needs and feelings with clarity and respect.

  • Compassion – Understanding and caring for others, both human and equine.

Our vision is for participants to not only grow in these areas, but to one day return as mentors — continuing the cycle of encouragement and leadership that Charlee and Buddy began.
